- Baekjae Annex the Mahan State into Baekjae in the 13th year of King Onjo's reign.
- Baekjae Subjected to Wonmahan in the 47th year of King Gohee's reign.
- Baekjae Change the name into Byukgol County in the 330th year of King Biryou's reign.
Unified Silla Period/Koryo Period
- Unified Silla Change the name into Gimje County in the 16th year of King Gyeongduck's reign.
- Koryo Promote from Jeonjumok to Gimje District in the 21st year of King Injong's reign.
- Koryo Promote from Jeonjumok to Geumgu District in the first year of King Myeongjong's reign.
Chosun Period
- Year 1466(In the 12th year of King Saejo's reign in Chosun Period) Change the name of Gimje District into Gimje County.
- Year 1628(In the 20th year of King Gwanghaegoon's reign in Chosun Period) Annex the Mangyeong District into Gimje County.
- Year 1759(In the 35th year of King Yongjo's reign in Chosun Period) Unite the Mangeyong District and Geumgu District.
Japanease Colonial Days
- Year 1895(In the 32nd year of King Go-jong’s reign in Chosun Period) Divide into Mangeyong District and Geumgu District.
- Year 1914 Unite the Mangeyong District and Geumgu District.
- 1931.11. 1 Promote the Gimje Township into Gimje Town.
- Year 1935 Change the names of Ssanggam Township and Surew Township into Hwangsan Township and Geumgu Township. Change the names of Hali Township and Chojau Township into Bongnam Township. (1 Town, 15 Township)
Goverment Founding Period
- Year 1949 Separate the Gwanghal Township from Jinbong Township (1 Town 16 Township)
- Oct. 1, 1961 Due to the abolition of the township self-governing system, the Gimje County self-governing system was implemented.
- Jan. 1, 1989 Partial areas of Gimje Town, Wolchon, Baeksan Township (Ha, Heungsa, Sangdongli), Bongnam Township(Wolsungli), Hwangsan Township (Nanbong, Hwangsan, Phjongli) within Gimje County were promoted to Gimje city and subjected to administrative division (15 Township)
- Aug. 1, 1990 (Presidential Decree No. 13406, promulgated on Jul. 9, 1990) Partial areas of Bongnam Township(Yangjeon, Seojeong, Dojangli) were incorporated from Gimje County to Gimje city with the change in the administrative zone (15 Township).
- Dec. 26, 1994 (Presidential Decree No. 14434) Geumpyeongli, Yongji Township was incorporated into Liseo Township, Wanju District while Namjeongli, Yongji Township and partial areas of Baekgu Township (Dodo, Gangheung, Dodukli) were incorporated into Jeonju city.
- Dec. 29, 1994 (Gimje County Regulations No. 1435) Sanggyo village, Namsangli, Hwangsan Township, Gimje County was incorporated into Daesongli, Bongnam Township.
- Jan. 1, 1995 (Legislation No. 4774) Gimje city and Gimje County united. Gimje city was newly established.
- Mar. 2, 1995 (Gimje City Regulations No. 121) Mangyeong Township was promoted to Mangyeong Town.
- Sep. 26, 1998 (Gimje City Regulations No. 245) Gwasodong was united (1 Town, 14 Township, 4 dong). Yocheon dong, Seoheungdong Yocheondong Shinpoongdong, Bonghwangdong Shinpoongdong Gyodong, Wolchundong Gyodong Wolchundong
